  DON COLLEY
SKETCHBOOK BOOTCAMP
FRIDAY, APRIL 22, 12-5pm at the MOUNT VERNON DAKOTA ART - FEW SPACES LEFT
SATURDAY, APRIL 23, 12-5pm at the BELLINGHAM DAKOTA ART - THIS CLASS IS FULL

$25 Fee
*each participant will receive:
Stillman & Birns Alpha Series 9"x6" sketchbook ($22.99 value)
Faber-Castell 6 Pitt Pen Shades of Grey set ($19.95 value)

Legendary Urban Sketcher Don Colley will conduct a 5-hour Sketchbook Bootcamp at our
Mount Vernon and Bellingham stores.
Sketchbook Bootcamp is from 12 – 5pm:
2 hours in the classroom - demonstration and materials discussion
2 hours on the streets - sketching
1 hour back in the classroom - how to finish

In beginning any work of art, one is presented with myriad choices. Asking a series of simple questions starting with - "What am I doing?" initiates a set of decisions that guide the actions that follow. This is editing, and it is the process whereby one will prioritized shapes, contours, planes, textures, vantage point, structure, in other words the pictorial elements and processes the artist orchestrates to realize the image. What is emphasized or eliminated, especially in the "shorthand" of sketching, defines what the artist feels and what the viewer is to understand from the artists interpretation of their experience.

The value of using a variety of tools and taking advantage of their, and the paper's inherent attributes, will help create suitably descriptive marks and textures and more rapidly develop the image. Our emphasis will be less on speed and more on the efficient and effective application of technique.

The Bootcamp participant is welcome to choose media of their liking. Below are some suggestions with the understanding that Don will demonstrate and encourage a range of tools.
Graphite - the classic sketching tool, be sure to have a range of values, H, 2B, 4B, 8B.
Ink - the class will explore the use of combining several water proof inks, in particular Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pens (I recommend getting a range of grays in the Regular brush and the Big Brush).

See more of Don's work here!
