Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame artist Richard McKinley will demonstrate the techniques and fundamentals necessary to structure a successful pastel landscape painting both on-location and in studio. This 6-day workshop will focus on producing a concise field-sketch painting, experimentation with creative underpainting techniques, and personal artistic mentoring. Through individual attention, group critiques, class discussions, mixed-media underpainting techniques, and finishing touches, you will leave with a clearer understanding of the universal basics of painting and new technique possibilities for approaching the landscape with pastel. Richard McKinley is a dedicated instructor. He has a wealth of information to share, is tireless in this pursuit and his intensity, focus, and energy are legendary.

Richard McKinley has been a professional working artist / teacher for over 40 years. His work is represented in several national galleries and is in the permanent collection of the Butler Institute of American Art Museum. He holds artist membership at the Salmagundi Club in NYC and has participated in their American Masters Exhibition.

In 2010 he was inducted into The Pastel Society of America's Hall of Fame at the National Arts Club in NYC and in 2012 designated Pastel Laureate by the Pastel Society of the West Coast. His oil and pastel paintings have been featured in numerous National / International art publications including: Southwest Art, American Artist, Workshop magazine, Artist magazine, Practique des Arts, and since 2003 has been a frequent contributing editor to Pastel Journal.

He has been included in numerous art books and years of his published materials were compiled in 2010 by North Light publications into the bestselling book: "Pastel Pointers, Top Secrets for Beautiful Pastel Paintings". Currently, a coffee table sized book featuring over 100 of Richard's pastel and oil paintings is in the works.

An avid plein air landscape painter, Richard divides his time between painting the locations he is passionate about, reinterpreting those paintings back in the studio, writing about art matters, and instructing painting workshops.
